Visual Culture Sustainability

This research group focuses on developing applied approaches that employ graphic design and visual communication as strategic tools to promote cultural sustainability within contemporary environments. The projects are grounded in a vision that considers design as a knowledge-based system capable of reproducing and activating cultural identity within digital and interactive contexts, thereby contributing to the integration of heritage and modernity.

The group works on integrating Arab and Islamic visual values—including ornamental systems and calligraphic structures—into innovative digital design solutions that support the quality of visual education, enhance creative industries, and contribute to building a sustainable visual identity for cities and local communities. The projects also rely on a systematic analysis of visual heritage and its connection to contemporary technologies, including interactive design and digital media.

These efforts emerge in response to growing challenges represented by the declining presence of cultural identity in digital products in the face of visual globalization, in addition to the limited number of applied studies linking graphic design to the Sustainable Development Goals. Accordingly, the group seeks to produce applied design models that bridge the gap between theory and practice while supporting the role of design in sustainable development.

The group’s outcomes focus on:

* Developing digital design models that support quality education (SDG 4).

* Enhancing innovation in design and creative industries (SDG 9).

* Supporting cultural sustainability and strengthening visual identity in sustainable cities and communities, contributing to inclusiveness and urban sustainability (SDG 11).
